Lambesc, Charles-Eugène of Lorraine, duke d'Elbeuf, prince de

   military figure
   Born in Versailles, Charles-Eugène de Lorraine, duke d'Elbeuf and prince de Lambesc, was a member of the house of guise and was connected to the family of Queen marie Antoinette. As commanding colonel of the Royal German Regiment, he ordered the firing on the crowd at the Tuileries during the revolution of 1789 on July 12, 1789. Charged but acquitted, he entered the service of the Austrian army against Revolutionary France (1792) and was named field marshal. During the Restoration, he became a peer and was named marshal of France (1814) by King louis XV III.
